Here are a selection of the latest planted trees, with no single dominant species.
Kobushi Magnolia is a new addition to Hounslow’s streets. This very hardy, slow growing, will reach its full potential around 15 years old at which point it looks spectacular in March and April with large, delicate, white flowers which can reach 10cm across and display for several weeks. Goblet-shaped, slightly fragrant, white flowers are tinged with pink. Later in the year seed pods split open to reveal red seeds which are attractive to birds.
The Lutece Elm is a telling entry — it's a modern disease-resistant cultivar bred specifically to bring elms back into UK streets without the vulnerability that killed off millions of British elms in the 1970s.
You'll also spot a strong lean toward species from hotter, drier climates than Britain's traditional oak-beech-ash palette: Persian Ironwood, Kobushi Magnolia, and the various Japanese cherries are all chosen partly because they tolerate heat, drought, and compacted urban soil better than native trees, anticipating the hotter summers and more erratic rainfall London is already seeing.
